CCTV systems are widely being used in shopping malls, restaurants and office buildings as a deterrent against nefarious activities. However, these systems have become a mass-marketed commodity with the motto of one-type-fits-all system, making many of them ill-installed and poorly maintained.
The difference being, a poorly installed system might set off a false alarm and dispatch whereas a system that is improperly installed has its damage done silently.
Importance of routine maintenance
In the case of analog CCTV system, there is the possibility of degradation of the tape over time that might lead to the degradation of the recorder and its other components. This tape comes of little use due to blurry and grainy images that fail to reveal the important details. This type of tapes are mostly to be seen in gas stations, fast-food restaurants, convenience stores, etc, where it is the cost that is given more value instead of effectiveness.
There are installers who are so preoccupied with offering the lowest bid that they compromise with the installations. This may include improper or inadequate use of cameras, making improper covering of the protected areas. The end result could be only verification of someone's presence without actually identifying the perpetrator.
The worst offenders in this case are some owners of this industry who often refuse to sign agreements of CCTV System maintenance services. This standard operating procedure of the industry should be maintained at any cost.
Recorders - As a guideline, recorders should be refurbished every 10,000 hours.
Videotapes – To determine the life expectancy of a VHS tape, one can use the following formula. Divide a number 2,000 by the time-lapse speed. As an example, if a time lapse recorder is in the "96 hour mode", then dividing that by 2000 results in a tape life expectancy of 20. Hence, after using the tape 20 times, one should install a fresh VHS tape.
Lenses – The sole aim of installing CCTV system is to clearly identify the perpetrator during such criminal activities like robbery at a bank, department store or convenience store. To achieve the intended goal, it is important not to use camera lenses with a wide field of view. This is to help positive identification of the burglar and not only verification about the presence of an intruder.
It is important to review the accounts of every CCTV customers. This is done to prioritize the need of different customers for effective CCTV maintenance in Ireland. One should be proactive and not wait for the customers to make calls. By following these guidelines, one can provide clear and quality images and help the law enforcement authorities with their works.
